After departing Ulaanbaatar in the morning, we ride south toward the sacred Zorgol Khairkhan Mountain. This granite mountain rises dramatically from the surrounding steppe and is considered sacred by local nomads. After exploring the mountain area, we continue to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a fascinating rock formation with ancient petroglyphs and Buddhist cave temples.
Today we ride deeper into the Gobi Desert to reach the breathtaking Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) formations. These striking limestone cliffs, shaped by wind and water over millennia, resemble a ruined city from a distance. The colorful layers of sedimentary rock create a stunning panorama that changes color throughout the day. This area offers excellent photography opportunities and a glimpse into Mongolia's ancient geological history.
Our journey today takes us to the luxurious Three Camels Lodge, an award-winning eco-lodge nestled in the heart of the Gobi. This architectural gem combines traditional Mongolian design with modern comforts. Along the way, we'll ride through varied desert landscapes and have opportunities to interact with nomadic camel herders who have adapted to life in this harsh yet beautiful environment.
Today features a shorter riding distance to allow more time for exploration. We'll visit the dramatic ice canyon of Yolyn Am (Vulture's Mouth) located in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. This surprising glacial canyon in the middle of the desert sometimes retains ice year-round. The canyon is home to numerous species of birds and wildlife including the elusive snow leopard. We'll enjoy a moderate hike through the canyon before continuing to our camp.
Today we ride northward, leaving the desert landscapes and entering the central Mongolian steppe. Our destination is the ruins of Ongiin Khiid, once one of the largest monastery complexes in Mongolia before it was destroyed during the communist purges of the 1930s. Located in a beautiful river valley oasis, the monastery is now being partially restored. The ride features diverse landscapes from desert to river valleys with dramatic mountain backdrops.
Today's journey takes us through some of Mongolia's most picturesque landscapes as we ride to Ulaan Tsutgalan (Red Waterfall), also known as the Orkhon Waterfall. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Orkhon Valley, this 20-meter waterfall formed by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes offers a dramatic spectacle. The surrounding area is rich in historical significance as the cradle of Mongolian civilization and former imperial capitals.
Our route today takes us to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire established by Genghis Khan. Here we'll visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, built in 1586 using stones from the ruins of Kharkhorin. After exploring this historical site, we continue to Elsen Tasarkhai, a picturesque area where sand dunes meet grassland, often called the "mini Gobi."
Today we head to Khustai National Park, home to the successfully reintroduced Przewalski's wild horses (takhi). After wildlife watching and learning about conservation efforts, we continue to the Mongol Nomadic camp, where we'll experience traditional nomadic culture through demonstrations of horsemanship, archery, and traditional games. This is a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Mongolian cultural heritage.
On our final day, we enjoy a leisurely morning at the Mongol Nomadic camp before making our short journey back to Ulaanbaatar. After returning the motorcycles, we'll have time for souvenir shopping at the State Department Store or the Naran Tuul Market. Our adventure concludes with a special farewell dinner at a top restaurant in the city, where we can share memories of our nomadic adventure through Mongolia.
